Artifice Magazine is devoted to fiction and poetry aware of its own artifice: pastiche, mash-ups, cut-ups, experiments gone awry, sly metafiction with heart, whatever.

We're a print magazine tentatively scheduled to put out our first issue in Jan 2010 (tell your friends!).

We just got called out, so this might be useful.

If you want to submit to Artifice Magazine, it will be useful to know how to do so!

Visit our submission guidelines here.

Or read them, here. Note that there are two parts: WHAT WE WANT and SUBMISSION GUIDELINES. They are equally important.

WHAT WE WANT

Artifice is looking for previously-unpublished stories, prose works, and poems, pieces that are (as the name implies) aware of their own artifice: pastiche, mash-ups, cut-ups, experiments gone awry, sly metafiction with a heart, and whatever other sorts of text machines you can imagine. We want things that will make us:

a. laugh and clap our hands with joy and surprise

b. sob silently and clap our hands, with a different sort of joy and surprise

We do not believe that postmodernism need or ought be heartless. But neither do we require that every story wear its heart on its sleeve.

Artifice believes, for reasons that we do not want to go into here, that 1 to 12 pages is about the right length for a short story. Artifice is unlikely to accept stories or prose works over 14 pages (unless something strange and fascinating is happening on every single one of those pages). Artifice is, however, slightly more likely than most publications to accept your long poem (though over 8 pages is pushing it). Generally, we like to keep things quick and eclectic. However, we reserve the right to publish anything of any length so long as it fits our aesthetic.

If you’re planning on sending us something over thirty pages, query first.

Payment is two copies of the issue in which your work appears.
