Artifice Magazine is devoted to fiction and poetry aware of its own artifice: pastiche, mash-ups, cut-ups, experiments gone awry, sly metafiction with heart, whatever.

We're a print magazine tentatively scheduled to put out our first issue in Jan 2010 (tell your friends!).

Check it. Everyone’s fave Chicago magazine (besides Artifice Magazine, of course) just sneak-peaked their cover art via Mr. Knabb’s tumblr site.

As you may know, I am the managing editor of Another Chicago Magazine. I have been at work on an animal issue for around a year now, and we are so close to completing it. However, a recent hang-up has been the cover image. Our featured artist is a local illustrator named Rob Funderburk. The issue will literally be dripping with his work. But Rob has been stymied on the cover design until last night. After a few drinks and some tasty brownies, we struck upon the very image for the issue. I gave Rob some pseudo-art direction, and he ran with it.
And so, here is the cover mock-up for the cover of ACM #49! I love it!
Rob is playing with the idea of the Pelican as seen by early scientists and zoologists, who believed that it was the “Christ of Nature.” Here’s a link to Rob’s blog. And here’s a link to information from the old Bestiaries where we learned that the pelican played such a peculiar role…
